
Rachel Freeland

Rachel Freeland is an Associate at Black & Associates whose corporate and commercial litigation practice is informed by her prior career working in the tech industry. Rachel brings a strong foundation in litigation, administrative law, and technology law, with experience spanning private practice, government, and academic research.

Prior to joining Black & Associates, Rachel articled at a national law firm where she worked on complex litigation and administrative law matters, including judicial review and appellate proceedings before the Federal Court of Appeal. In addition to her private practice experience, Rachel completed a Technology Law Internship with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and a summer internship in employee and labour relations at a national bank. She has also served as a research assistant to leading administrative and technology law scholars at the University of Ottawa.

​Rachel’s clients benefit from her substantial hands-on experience in the technology sector. She understands that effective legal advice requires a practical understanding of how a client’s business and technology actually operate. Before and throughout her legal career, Rachel worked with multiple technology start-ups, most recently serving as a Finance and Operations Specialist at a blockchain company. In that role, she supported financial operations, investor and regulatory due diligence, and corporate record-keeping. Rachel's clients benefit from her valuable insight into the commercial and regulatory realities that often underpin legal disputes.

Rachel earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa, graduating cum laude with a Specialization in Law and Technology. She also holds an Honours Bachelor of Commerce from the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University and studied abroad at Maastricht University in the Netherlands. Outside of her practice, Rachel enjoys travelling, skiing, and spending time outdoors.
